More Details about Toshiba 14MP 1.4um-pixel BSI Sensor

Toshiba presents more details about its 14MP 1/2.3-inch BSI sensor, including its part number TCM5101CL and the block diagram. Toshiba announced the sensor over a year ago, but so far the details were quite sketchy.

The sensor has 8 LVDS lanes, something that only Omnivision offered in its recent 10MP sensor. Toshiba sensor can run at 1080p/60fps rate or at 15fps at full resolution.

  1. Is this an HDR sensor, or why are 8 LVDS lanes required? With 12 bit pixels each lane could be running at something around 320-350 Mbps (14M x 15fps x 12 bits / 8 lanes). I would have thought that LVDS lanes could run at twice that speed, so only needing 4 lanes.

  2. You can ask the same question about Omnivision's 8-lane sensor:

  3. I don't think that each lane runs such high speed.

  4. probably packing words to 16-bit packets

  5. I think Toshiba offering same LVDS lanes as Omnivision so it can steal business from Omnivision. STM has done this trick before.

  6. Someone may over-value Ovt. Toshiba has such solution, surely from some bug customers' requests.
Both Toshiba and STM have far better and strong customer base rather than Ovt.
Except for the A company, Ovt has no partnerships with top 10 handset makers.

Now because its weird logistic plan, Ovt prefer to ignore other application markets but stay with A. To me, the CEO really had guts to make such decision. Once Ovt loses A, will Mr. Hong take all resposibilities??

  7. Is output clock embedded? or is it a separate lane?
